Happy Birthday Uncle Kia!!

May 26th, 2007

In true Punk style, Nora puts on her hot pink boots (a gift from Uncle Kia), spikes her hair up (not that it will go any other way) and says….

“Happy Birthday Uncle Kia!!!”

Looks like she might have some of her Uncle Kia’s punk rock spirit in her already!

Nora is 4 weeks old today!

What better way to celebrate Nora’s 4 week birthday than with a yummy bottle!

Nora Update Email #5

May 15th, 2007

Hello Everyone,
Well Nora didn’t get to come home last week :(

She’s still very stable and doing well but they had to adjust her feedings. She was doing great with the breast milk until the doctors increased her feedings allowing her to eat on demand and then it was just too much on her little system. They suspended her feedings for a couple of days to give her system time to clean itself out and put her back on the TPN (the medicine that substitutes for food but not good for her). They resumed her feedings yesterday through her feeding tube instead of orally with a pre-digested formula. She’s still receiving TPN but the plan is to decrease the TPN again and slowly increase the formula. She is happy and content now that she’s getting food in her tummy again.

Our doctors here are consulting with Shands Childrens Hospital on her treatment. They were going to send Nora down there for an evaluation today but that has been postponed for a couple of days in hopes that the smoke from the wild fires that is closing portions of the highway will clear up. In addition to Shands, we are communicating with a doctor in Boston who specializes in short bowel syndrome and a new treatment that combats the bad side effects of TPN. We are very hopeful for our little daughters recovery and feel that there are other options to be explored besides a transplant that will result in a better quality of life for our little sweetie.
We appreciate all of your support and love. Please keep up your prayers and positive thoughts for Nora.

Nora Update Email #4

May 8th, 2007

Hello Everyone!

I am sorry I have not sent out a Nora update but Sarah ended up with an infection in her incision on Friday and had to be readmitted into the hospital. She is doing fine now and they let her go home today and should recover fine.

Nora is doing GREAT! We have been giving her more and more breast milk every day via bottle and lowering the amount of TPN (the nutrient they have been feeding her intravenously that is bad for her but has been needed to keep her alive as her surgery healed) daily. The expectation was that Nora would not absorb any of the milk and would have to stay on TPN and wait for a transplant. On Thursday a doctor told us that she had close to a 0% chance of survival and they were just giving her milk to prove she would not absorb since the textbook said she wouldn’t but Nora has done nothing but prove them wrong. Yesterday Sarah was able to start breastfeeding and today we were told she was being taken off the TPN all together this evening and should be able to come home in a couple days!!!!! The doctors are not sure how she is absorbing the nutrients and actually brought in a group of medical students and called her the “miracle baby” today. All I know is we have a strong little girl and we know that all of your love and prayers played a part in Nora’s miraculous and speedy recovery and we thank you all for your support. I expect we will still have challenges ahead of us but for the moment we have a healthy, beautiful little girl that cant wait to meet you all! Thanks again for everyone’s prayers and support through this extremely trying time.

Well Nora did great with her Pedialyte yesterday and is now moving on to breast milk this morning! It will take a bit of time to see if she can absorb anything and the doctors say the chances are very small but there are always miracles. I think we will probably be going to Shands early next week and hopefully on to Miami for a transplant. It looks like it may be a long road but we are holding it together and Nora is very stable right now so we couldn’t ask for much more. Thanks for all of your support and prayers.

Nora Update Email #2

May 3rd, 2007

Hey Everyone!

I wanted to give everyone an update on our little miracle Nora. They decided to do the tests last night instead of today and found NO leaks, YAY!, and so today they hope to try and feed her and see if her small intestine can absorb any of the food. We are not out of the woods yet but our strong little girl is doing great and is now off all pain meds and all the tubes were removed from her face so she is feeling much better and is looking healthier everyday. We really appreciate all the love and support you have all given us through this trying time and know that all of the positive energy that has been sent our way has helped our Nora be as strong as she is. I will send another update on our little miracle once we see how she does with feeding, hopefully later today. Thanks again for your prayers and love.
